Just last month I went on a little adventure.
I decided to cycle across Australia for a charity for my brother Shawn.
The ride started with me dipping my tire into Indian Ocean in Perth, and finished with a tire dip in the Tasman Sea with the Sydney Opera House in the back ground.
It would be 100 percent self supported. It was a full adventure straight out of an adventure movie of some kind.
Just everything you can imagine when cycling across a wild landscape like that happened and was seen, along with many, many things that weren’t expected.
I have always loved the Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, quote that “the adventure starts when everything goes wrong”.
Now this isn’t about the trip exactly today, but the training, or lack there of.
I had only logged about 6 total days on a road bike EVER and that was in the 4 week period prior to the start of the ride.
After about 3 days I had already cycled more than I ever have before.
And for 29 more days I cycled for 8 to 12 hours per day with a loaded bike.
However, I have been doing CrossFit and Functional training for over 5 years.
Question…
Do you think it was my 6 days of road bike training or my functional training that got me through the trip?
Exactly. It was all the functional training.
Every day we do something different in the gym. Every day the workouts are different (and fully customizable).
After so much time of doing something different and doing any movement that comes up that day, you realize that you can actually do anything. Because you are already doing that every day!
There are some people out there who say CrossFit and functional training isn’t the best.
Well if there is a program that can let someone with essentially zero training, bike across a continent injury free and be able to go right back into the program the day after,
Then well that is the fitness program I want to be in. Period.
That is the type of health I want. I never want to be in a position that I can’t do something because of my fitness level. With Strong Together, that will never happen.
See you in class.
All the best.
